Introduction to DataStage

DataStage is a central file store. Occasionally DataStage is sold to and installed in an organization and its IT support staff is probable to maintain it and to solve DataStage user’s problems. In some cases IT support is outsourced and may not become attentive of DataStage until it has been installed. There are two DataStage engines, namely server engine and parallel engine

  • Parallel engine


1) What are the DataStage components?

Ans: Datastage consists of a number of client and server components. It has four client components. They are:
  • Datastage Designer
  • Datastage Director
  • Datastage Manager
  • Datastage Administrator



2) What are the types of jobs available in DataStage?

  • Server Job
  • Parallel Job
  • Sequencer Job
  • Container Job



3) Explain the difference between DataStage and Informatica?

Ans: DataStage support parallel processing whereas Informatica does not. Links are object in the DataStage, in Informatica it is a port to port connectivity. In Informatica it is easy to execute slowly changing dimensions which is a bit complex in DataStage. DataStage doesn’t support complete error handling.



4) Mention the components of Data Stage?

 5) What is the difference between Server Job and Parallel Jobs?

 Ans: Server Jobs works in chronological way whereas parallel jobs work in parallel fashion for I/O processing.



6) Define metadata?

Ans: Data about data is known as Metadata. A table classification which describes the structure of the table is an example of Meta data.



7) Define merge?

Ans: Merge is a stage which available in both parallel and server jobs. It is used to join two tables (server/parallel). Merge requires that the master table/dataset and the update table/dataset to be sorted. It performed on a key field, and the key field is fixed in the master and update dataset/table.



8) Define Sequencers?

 Ans: Sequencers allow us to coordinate the control flow of multiple activities in a job sequence. It can have multiple input triggers with multiple output triggers.



9) What is Active and Passive Stage?

Ans: Passive Stages are used for data extraction and loading whereas Active Stage are used to implements and process the business rules.



10) Define version Control?

Ans: Version Control stores different versions of DS jobs runs different versions of same job reverts to previous version of a job view version histories.
